Kibale Forest National Park, Chimpanzee Tracking Adventures in Uganda

Located in the Western Part of Uganda, the Park covers an area of 766 square kilometres (296 sq mi) located between 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) to 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) in elevation.

The Park is prominently known as a top Primate Adventure destination in Africa due to the numerous primates that inhabit the thick green forest vegetation with the chimpanzees being the most popular. Vervet Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Black and White Colobus Monkeys, L’hoest’s monkey also inhabit the forest vegetation. Other wildlife animals also inhabit the forest vegetation and these include; the red and blue duikers, bushbucks, sitatungas, bushpigs, giant forest hogs, common warthogs and African buffalo, African golden cats, servals.

Chimpanzee Tracking Process in Kibale Forest National Park Uganda

The most prominent Safari Activity in the Park is Chimpanzee Tracking which requires you to transfer from one place to another in the forest vegetation searching for the Chimpanzees in their natural vegetation habitat.

You will track these for 3-5 hours and when you meet them, only an hour is allowed to stay in their presence taking numerous photos to keep for memories. After tracking the primates, you will transfer back to the headquarters to receive your Chimpanzee Tracking Certificate.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience at Kibale Forest National Park

The Chimpanzee Habituation experience is another activity travelers can enjoy while in Kibale Forest National park and this requires travelers to transfer and stay in the presence of the chimpanzees from the time they wake up very early in the morning to the time they build new nests to rest for the night. You will follow the chimpanzees throughout the day as they carry out their activities.

This will give you an opportunity to learn a certain group/ community of the chimpanzees as well as their way of life on a daily basis. You will notice them patrol, forage, breast feed, copulate, play, communicate etc. You will carry packed lunch to eat for lunch as you follow the chimpanzees’ whole day.

Cost of the Chimpanzee Habituation and Tracking permit

The Chimpanzee Tracking Permit at Kibale Forest National Park costs US $150 per person where as the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience costs US $220 per person interested.

How to Obtain the Chimpanzee Tracking/ Habituation Experience Permit

The Chimpanzee Tracking/ Habituation Experience can be obtained through contacting the Uganda Wildlife Authority directly using email or travelers can contact and book the safaris with skilled valid tour operator agencies in Uganda which will book and reserve permits on your behalf. These should be obtained prior to your day of arrival.

Other Safari Activities to do in Kibale Forest National Park

Birding

Birding at Kibale Forest National park is also a very exciting safari activity as it involves you transferring from one place to another in the thick forest vegetation watching numerous bird species flying from one place to another. You will transfer for a period of 3-5 hours along various trails in company of a skilled birding ranger guide who will inform you more about the unique bird species.

The Birds you will watch include; White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Yellow-billed Barbet, Western Nicator, Grey-winged Robin-chat, White-tailed Ant-thrush, Brown-backed Scrub-robin, Black-and-white Shrike-flycatcher, Brown-throated Wattle-eye, Superb Sunbird, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Bocage’s Bush-shrike, Black Bishop, White-breasted Negrofinch and Black-crowned Waxbill

Hikes and Nature Walks

Hikes and Nature Walks are another exciting safari activity to carry out in the park and this includes both day and night hikes through the forest. These will offer unique sightings at birds, primates and vegetation terrain of Kibale Forest National Park. There are numerous trails hikers can take on inside and outside the park with the prominent 12 kilometers trails that offers you scenic views at the varying terrains, forest, rivers, swamps, grassland, etc.

Nocturnal Forest Walks

Nocturnal Forest walks can be taken on during the night with a skilled ranger guide taking a period of 1-2 hours offering you sightings of nocturnal animals like the Bush Babies, Pottos and by chance Tree Pangolins. These are requested prior to the day of visit and lodges should be notified to prepare travelers dinner.
