Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary Congo is a rehabilitation center located in the DR Congo that inhabits the rare species of Chimpanzees. These are protected and habituated to be approached by humans that visit the sanctuary to learn more about the rare chimpanzees as well as their unique way of life. It is located along the Eastern bank of Lake Kivu between latitude 2º15’ and 2º30 South and longitudes 28º45’ and 28º85’ east.

It is within the Great African Rift approximately to Kahuzi Biega National Park and Bukavu which is the main town for feeding the rare species of Chimpanzees. It also lies with the region which was a prison before during the regime of President Mobutu. The Sanctuary is located 50 kilometers off the main town of Bukavu, 5 kilometers from the Kavuma Airport and 10 kilometers from the Kahuzi Biega National Park headquarters.

About the Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary was founded in 2003 to provide a haven for the orphaned Chimpanzees and has about 50 Chimpanzees and 60 Monkeys in 10 different species. The Sanctuary has helped conserve the lives of the Chimpanzees as well as reduce illegal animal trade in the DR Congo.

With exceptional growth today, the sanctuary has more than 100 primates that can be seen at the sanctuary. The sanctuary includes several activities which include; Conservation Education, Ecotourism, Reintroduction research and Implementation, Improved habitat management and Protection, Great ape medicine training, Community participation and Program development and Overall capacity building.

Management of the Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary

The Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary is managed by the Institute Congolese pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), a government institution responsible for conserving and protected area management as well as wildlife in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ICCN has full jurisdiction over all animals at the Centre and coordinates all wildlife confiscations.

How to Get to Lwiro Chimpanzee sanctuary

Lwiro Chimpanzee sanctuary can be accessed by Air, Water and Road depending on the preferences of the travelers interested in tracking/ watching the rare species of Chimpanzees in their natural vegetation habitat. It is located in the Eastern part of DR Congo along the road from Bukavu to Goma hence a suitable place to visit on your transfer from Virunga National Park to Kahuzi Biega National Park.

By Road;

Travelers can transfer along the main road from Bukavu for about 15 kilometers to Lwiro Gate, 5 kilometers from Kavuma Airport and 10 kilometers for the Kahuzi Biega National Park headquarters.

By Air;

You will book an airline ticket to Kigali Rwanda and Kamembe-Cyagugu and Rusizi with Rwanda Air then later with your confirmation receipt, contact the ICCN for a valid Congo Tourist Visa.
